Reset & Refocus: Simple Shifts to Get out of a Rut
A little mind dump on getting back to my best self
Hi my loves,
I hope you’re having the best month so far. I’ve grown to love autumn so much—the crisp air, the beautiful changing leaves, and that cozy, romantic vibe that makes everything feel like a movie. There’s something so comforting about it, like a fresh start.
This year has been full of ups and downs for me—so many changes and inconsistencies. But I’m finally starting to feel like myself again. Your 20s can be such a strange time, don’t you think? We’re constantly growing and evolving while also trying to navigate so many aspects of life: relationships, career, health, mental well-being. It can be overwhelming. There are definitely moments when you stop and think, “What am I even doing?” And it’s easy to fall into a negative spiral.
When my skin started acting up and I discovered mold in my apartment, it triggered gut issues and a whole wave of mental and physical challenges. It felt like everything was falling apart. And even though I’m blessed in so many ways, I want to be real about this because we all have our moments.
One thing I’ve learned is that life comes in seasons. Not every season will be one where you’re thriving in every area. Sometimes your career is on fire but your social life slows down. Or maybe you’re focusing on your health and not doing as much traveling or indulging in hobbies. And that’s okay. What matters is finding the things that truly move the needle forward for you and figuring out your non-negotiables to stay grounded.
If you’re in a rut, start small. Don’t try to change everything overnight. It can be something as simple as starting a Gua Sha routine every morning for three weeks (since it takes 21 days to form a habit). Pick one small thing at a time, focus on it for a bit, and let those feel-good moments build up.
Feel-Good Things I’m Loving:
- Gua Sha and Ice Rolling
This combo is incredible for draining the lymphatic system, depuffing, and toning the face. Plus, it’s so therapeutic—I love starting my mornings this way.
- Sunlight and Steps Outside
I love combining my walks with catching up with friends, whether in person or over FaceTime. Fresh air, movement, and good conversation? The best.
- Sauna Blanket, Red Light Mask, Sandalwood Diffuser, and Dandelion Tea
My nighttime ritual for winding down. It detoxes and relaxes me while setting the perfect mood for the evening.
- Morning Matcha Routine
Starting my day with matcha is grounding and energizing—a small ritual that feels luxurious.
- Duolingo (Learning French)
Last month, I decided to learn French. I only do 10 minutes a day, but it’s so fun and rewarding to keep my mind growing.
- Stretching in the Morning
Just a few minutes of stretching right when I wake up helps me start the day feeling refreshed and aligned.
- Baking or Cooking for Someone I Love
Whether it’s making sourdough or cooking a meal, there’s something so joyful about creating food for the people I care about.
- Fresh Sheets and Clean Makeup Brushes
There’s nothing like fresh, crisp sheets and clean makeup brushes. It’s such a simple act of self-care that makes everything feel refreshed.
One thing I’ve really come to realize: no one has it all together, no matter how it looks from the outside. We’re all learning, growing, and figuring it out. So be gentle with yourself, and be mindful of how you talk to yourself. It sounds cliché, but the way you speak to yourself truly shapes your reality.
When I was struggling with my skin and dealing with mold, I started slipping into negative thought patterns like, “I can’t” or “I’ll do it when XYZ happens.” That mindset wasn’t productive, and it certainly wasn’t helping me feel like the person I wanted to be. So, I made a conscious shift. Every time I did my makeup, I’d tell myself, “My skin is beautiful, glowing, and clear.” It felt silly at first, but it really worked.
It’s about balancing tough love and soft love. Yes, you can feel your emotions and have a moment when things are tough, but then you have to get up and make a change. It’s important to address what’s going on—whether that’s through therapy, journaling, or any other outlet—and not sweep things under the rug. But remember, no one else can change your life for you. You’re in control. That’s scary, but also kind of amazing, right?
And never break promises to yourself. If you say you’re going to do something, do it. The more you keep promises to yourself, the more you build trust and confidence. If you plan to wake up at 6 a.m., don’t wait until next week—start tomorrow. Just make sure the promises you set are realistic and achievable.
Lastly, clean your space. Seriously. Organize your fridge, pantry, closet—do your laundry and wash your sheets. A clean, inspiring space can completely shift your mindset. Romanticize the process: play an audiobook, light a candle, brew your favorite coffee. It doesn’t have to feel like a chore; it can be a ritual.
Anyway, I know this was a bit of a mind dump, but I’m feeling so peaceful and happy this morning, and I wanted to share that energy with you. If you’re in a rut, just know it’s temporary. You *will* get through it. Start with the small things that make you feel good and let them build from there.
My challenge for you this week: get outside every day, even if it’s just for 20 minutes. Move your body, breathe in the fresh air—you’ve got this.
Lots of love always,
Steph xx
